Blood pressure is one of the important things within our bodies, since it helps blood to be pumped around at the correct rate and pressure. A blood pressure reading which is too high or too low can cause big problems for your body and lead to further issues, particularly if it is extreme or if you have had a high or low blood pressure reading for a long time. There are many reasons why it’s so important to monitor blood pressure, either for you as an individual or for other people if you are a health professional.

It can lead to heart problems and strokes

Around half of people over the age of 60 suffer from high blood pressure, also known as hypertension. The reasons for this are varied – they might have suffered a lot of stress all their lives or ate a poor diet for years. This causes lots of pressure in the body as the blood is trying to pump around in the correct fashion, and this can often lead to heart attacks and other heart problems, and most commonly, strokes. People often think that strokes are caused by more serious underlying problems, but in many cases, it is simply due to high blood pressure – a problem that can often be avoided.

High blood pressure can make you feel tired and lacking in energy

If you’re feeling tired all the time, there could be a number of health problems that you are suffering from, and in order to correct determine what is causing it, you will need to visit your doctor for a check-up. However, high blood pressure is just one of the reasons why you might be feeling tired a lot or unfocused at work or school. A doctor or nurse will use a blood pressure checker to monitor the pressure and will be able to tell you if it is notably high or low. You can then take steps to reduce your blood pressure if it is high, such as eating a healthier diet and exercising more. Certain foods are also known to increase your blood pressure, such as fatty foods and greasy junk foods. Staying away from these means that you don’t necessarily have to eat less in order to get your blood pressure down – you just have to eat healthier and better.

Low blood pressure can make you faint

Low blood pressure, often caused through a lack of salt and other nutrients in your diet, can cause you to feel nauseous and faint at certain points during the day. People will low blood pressure have been known to faint spontaneously throughout the day, since they become so faint and weak, particularly after straining themselves slightly more than usual, such as running for the bus or going an extra hour or two without lunch. Low blood pressure, while arguably not as dangerous as high blood pressure, comes with its own set of problems. If you need to increase your blood pressure, try adding a little more salt into your diet by sprinkling it liberally on your food.
